ソチ冬季五輪は２３日、ロシア南部ソチのフィシュト五輪スタジアムで閉会式を行い、１７日間にわたり開催された大会が幕を下ろした。
今大会には８８カ国・地域から２８００人以上の選手が参加し、ともに史上最多を記録。若いファンの関心を集めるため、１２の新種目も実施された。
国際オリンピック委員会（ＩＯＣ）のトーマス・バッハ会長は閉会式前に報道陣に対し、「素晴らしい五輪だった。選手たちがとても満足してくれたことが何よりも大きい」とコメント。
今大会では前回のバンクーバー大会より５つ多い、計６件のドーピング違反が発覚したが、同会長は「件数は重要ではないと考えている。システムが機能していることが分かったことが大事」とし、「ロシアが五輪を成功させることに懐疑的だった人々も考えが変わったはず」とも述べた。
今大会では開催国ロシアが金１３個を含む最多３３個のメダルを獲得。日本は１９９８年長野大会の１０個に次ぐ歴代２位、８個のメダルを獲得した。
