サウジアラビアは1月3日、イランと外交関係を断絶すると発表した。サウジアラビアが2日にイスラム教シーア派の有力指導者を処刑したことに抗議して、イランのサウジ大使館などが襲撃されたことを受けた措置。
ロイター通信によると、サウジのジュイベル外相は3日の記者会見で、イランの外交官に48時間以内の国外退去を命じたことを明らかにした。ジュイベル外相は、大使館襲撃の背後に、イランがサウジ国内で「テロリスト細胞」を育て、サウジ国内の不安定化を狙っていることがあるとして、「サウジアラビアは、我が国の安全を脅かすことを許さない」とイランを批判した。
スンニ派の王族が支配するサウジアラビアと、シーア派が多数派のイランは、最近でもシリアやイエメンの内戦を巡って対立を深めている。両国の断交で、中東情勢の混迷に拍車をかける可能性もある。
