イラクでイスラム教スンニ派の過激派「イラク・シリア・イスラム国（ISIS）」が勢力を拡大する中、イラク軍は6月28日、ISISが支配する北部の主要都市ティクリートの全面奪還に向けて大規模な地上戦に突入した。中東の衛星テレビ局アルジャジーラ（電子版）は、地上部隊はティクリートを包囲したとみられると伝えた。時事ドットコムなどが報じた。
フセイン元大統領（スンニ派）の故郷としても知られるティクリートは、「イスラム国」が11日に掌握。政府軍は26日、ヘリコプターで空挺（くうてい）部隊を投入するなどして、巻き返しに出た。軍側は大学を奪還したと発表する一方、過激派側も撃退に成功したと主張している。アルジャジーラによると、軍部隊はティクリート南のサマラから進攻しているという。

軍事行動に加えて、政治解決に向けた話し合いも始まった。イラクのシーア派の最高権威シスタニ師が27日、7月1日の議会招集前に各政治勢力が次期大統領、首相、議長について合意するよう呼び掛け、挙国一致政権の早期発足を促したという。
次期首相については、国内外から退陣圧力が強まっているマリキ首相以外の人物を求める声が強い。
イラクでは4月末の連邦議会選挙でマリキ氏率いるシーア派中心の政党連合が勝利したが、過半数には届かなかった。マリキ氏は自身の退陣要求を拒否しており、新政権樹立に向けた連立交渉の混乱が懸念される。
