イラクの中部の都市ヒッラで11月24日、ガソリンスタンドに爆弾を積んだトラックが突入して爆発し、およそ100人が死亡した。過激派組織IS（イスラム国）が犯行声明を出している。犠牲者の大半はイランから訪れたイスラム教シーア派の巡礼者とみられる。ロイターなどが報じた。
イラク政府軍やシーア派民兵、クルド人部隊などで構成する人民武装軍団（PMU）などが、ISの拠点である北部の都市モスルの奪還作戦を進めており、今回のテロはモスル奪還作戦への揺さぶりを狙ったとみられる。
イラクの作戦司令部は23日、PMUがモスルを完全に包囲し、ISの主要な補給路を絶ったと発表した。
BBCによると、ヒッラは首都バグダットより南に約100キロの位置にあり、ヒッラの北西約35キロのカルバラでは20日に、預言者ムハンマドの孫イマーム・フセインを悼むシーア派の宗教行事「アルバイーン」があった。ガソリンスタンドには、巡礼用バス5台が停まっていた。
ISはシーア派を異教者とみなしており、ネット上の犯行声明で「休憩所に集まっていたシーア派の人間たちに自爆攻撃を仕掛けた」と述べた。
