CNNによると、爆発はスルクのアマーラ・文化公園の施設で発生した。スルチはIS（イスラム国）とクルド人勢力の激戦地となったシリアの都市コバニ（アイン・アルアラブ）の近くにある。爆発時、施設ではクルド人の若者が300人ほど集まり、コバニを復興させるための集会が開かれていた。目撃者のエルハン・スバーシさんは、「子供たちは叫び声を上げていた。みんな叫んで走り回っていた」と証言した。
NHKニュースによると、コバニはISが2014年7月以降攻勢をかけ包囲していたが、2015年1月にクルド人勢力が撃退した。しかし6月下旬にはISが再び攻撃を仕掛け、激しい戦闘が続いている。
