化学兵器の使用が疑われるシリア政府軍への軍事攻撃を米国が検討する(日本語版記事)一方で、イスラエルでは、ガスマスクを入手しようとする人々が急増している

イスラエル紙の『ハアレツ』によれば、ガスマスクの配布を管理しているIsraeli Postal Service(イスラエル郵政公社)では、8月25日(現地時間)に通常の4倍にのぼる注文を受けたという。

テルアビブに拠点を置くニュースサイト「Ynet」によると、米国が主導してアサド政権を攻撃すれば、イスラエルにも報復攻撃が及ぶと心配するイスラエル国民は多い。

イスラエルのベンヤミン・ネタニヤフ首相は、今年の春にシリアの首都ダマスカスで連続して発生した反政府軍による攻撃を受けて、すべての国民にガスマスクが配布されるよう、イスラエル政府に要求していた。『タイムズ・オブ・イスラエル』によると、現在、イスラエル国民の6割がガスマスクを保有しているという。

イスラエルは2010年2月に、「2013年までにイスラエル国民1人につき1個のガスマスク、計約800万個を配布する」と決定している。

『ニューヨーク・タイムズ』紙の報道では、米当局者が、「先週から、シリア国内の軍事目標リストがホワイトハウスで回覧されている」と発言。オバマ大統領は、フランスのオランド大統領およびイギリスのキャメロン首相と会談し、対応策を協議している。

AP通信によれば、ドイツも26日に、「化学兵器の使用が確認された場合はシリアへの攻撃を支援する」と発表。アサド政権を「罰する必要がある」と述べている。
