アギーレ監督は「結果は良くなかった。PKになったら何が起こるかわからない」とコメントしている。

前半7分、日本はディフェンスラインのスキを突かれて失点。負けたら終わりの状況でプレシャーがかかる中、遠藤に替わって入った柴崎岳が後半36分、本田圭佑とのパス交換からミドルシュートを決めて追いついた。しかしそのあとは度重なるチャンスを決められなかった。
PK戦では1人目の本田、6人目の香川が失敗した。
