EU残留派のジョー・コックス議員殺害、白人至上主義の被告に終身刑

「この殺人が政治的な行動で、テロ行為に見えました」

ロンドンの中央刑事裁判所は11月23日、EU残留派として活動していた女性下院議員ジョー・コックス氏(当時41)を殺害した罪などに問われたトーマス・メア(53)被告に終身刑を言い渡した。

白人至上主義者のメア被告は、イギリス中部ウエストヨークシャー州バーストールで6月16日にジョー・コックス下院議員を銃撃したあと刃物で刺して殺害した。殺人罪で有罪になり、終身刑を言い渡された。

中央刑事裁判所(通称オールド・ベイリー)の陪審員は、殺害の他、コックス氏を助けに来た通行人を刺して重傷を負わせた罪、意図的な銃や刃物の所持も含め、メア被告に判決を出すのに約1時間半を費やした。

メア被告は裁判で何の証拠も提出せず、判決の瞬間も、何の反応も示さなかった。コックス氏の遺族は満席の法廷で静かに座っていた。

ジャスティス・ウィルキー裁判官は、この殺害が「間違いなく白人至上主義」によるものだと述べた。

ウィルキー裁判官はこう述べた。「あなたは愛国者ではありません。あなたがしたことは我が国そのものを裏切る行為です。議会制民主主義に忠実であることへの裏切りです」

さらにこう述べた。「明らかに、あなたの動機は国や国民への愛ではなく、ナチスへの敬愛や反民主主義的な白人至上主義の信念です」

メア被告は重傷を負わせ、意図的な銃や刃物の所持でも有罪判決を受けた。

メア被告の弁護士は裁判官に、メア被告が法廷で証言できるかを尋ねたが、却下された。

夫のブレンダン・コックス氏は中央刑事裁判所に、「自分は報復のためにここにいる訳ではない」と述べ、「臆病者」と言われているメア被告に対しては「ただ同情するだけ」と証言した。

コックス氏は、「私にはこの殺人が政治的な行動で、テロ行為に見えました。愛情の代わりに憎しみが溢れて引き起こされた行為です」と述べた。

EU離脱を問う国民投票の1週間前だった6月16日、メア被告は2人の子供の母親を銃撃し刺した。コックス氏は面談のためウェスト・ヨークシャー州のバーストール図書館に着いたところだった。

「ブリテン・ファースト(イギリスが第一)」と叫んだ被告は、自宅にネオナチの資料を隠し持ち、コックス下院議員の資料を集めていたことが、中央刑事裁判所での公判中に明らかになった。

22日の裁判の最終審理で、メア被告の弁護人を務めたサイモン・ラッセル・フリント王室顧問弁護士は、メア被告の弁護に必要な証拠申請を1つも行わなかった。

退室する前、フリント弁護士は陪審員にこう呼びかけた。「それぞれの起訴理由について何が正しい判決かを決める責任を負っているのは、あなた方だけです。トーマス・メア被告が静かな1人の生活に戻れるか、一生ジョー・コックス氏を殺害した男と言われ続けるかを決めるのは、あなた方です」

コックス氏はEU離脱の1週間前に殺害された

メア被告は罪をすべて否認していた。

非営利団体「Hope Not Hate(憎しみではなく希望を)」は、「メア被告は1990年代にイギリスに入ってきた暴力的な人種戦争から人種嫌悪的な思想に影響され、触発されました」と述べた。

この団体によると、問題を起こしているのはメア被告「ただ1人」ではなく、過去16年間で少なくとも48人の極右活動家や支持者がテロ攻撃で有罪判決を受けているという。

「Hope not Hate」のニック・ローズ氏は「トーマス・メアは1人で行動しましたが、30年以上ナチスのプロパガンダを読み続けたことで触発されたのです」。

「コックス下院議員を標的にしたとき、メア被告はイギリスで増加するナチス思想のテロリストに追従しました。彼らは既存の体制と戦闘状態にあると信じています。特にリベラルな政治家はマイノリティよりも標的にされることが多く、こうしたイデオロギーは1990年代、イギリス国内のナチス信奉者の間で支配するようになり、現在の彼らの思想の強力な柱となっています」
