IS(イスラム国)のプロパガンダを続けるイギリス人、変わり果てた姿で最新動画に現る

なぜこれほど痩せてしまったのかは分からない。

イギリス人ジャーナリストのジョン・キャントリー氏は、2012年11月にシリアの反政府組織に拉致された。7月12日に公開されたISのプロパガンダ動画に彼の最新の姿が映っている。以前よりも顔色が悪く、痩せたように見える。

イギリス人のジャーナリストで写真家のジョン・キャントリー氏は自らを「IS(イスラム国)の人質」と名乗り、これまでさまざまなISのプロパガンダ動画に登場していた。しかし、7月に公開された今回の動画を見ると、著しく顔色が悪く痩せこけたように見える。

IS系列のメディア「アマク通信」が7月12日に公開した動画を見ると、キャントリー氏は現在ISの支配下にあるイラク北部の都市モスルにいるとみられる。

大きめのボタンダウンシャツをズボンの外に垂らし、空爆で破壊された建物の前にいる。

「こんにちは、ジョン・キャントリーです。今日私たちはモスル大学、というよりモスル大学の残骸のある場所にいます」

2016年1月11日の写真。アメリカ軍が公開した動画には、ISをターゲットに、イラクのモスル近郊の金融センターで空爆する様子が映っている。

動画は3分ほどの長さで、キャントリー氏は同盟国が大学を破壊したことを非難し、空爆はモスルの中でも一般市民が大勢暮らすエリアが狙われていると訴えている。

アメリカ、イラク当局は、キャンパスが軍司令部として使用され、戦闘員たちがそこで爆発物を製造しているという見方を変えていない。アメリカ率いる同盟国は3月19日に大学を爆破した。ISの動画の中にはドローンからの映像で街の大部分が破壊された様子が映っている。

このベテランのジャーナリストは、不気味なほど落ち着いてレポートしているように見えるが、これまでサンデー・タイムズ、サンデー・テレグラフやBBCなどのメディアで働いてきたキャントリー氏は、今強制されて無理矢理プロパガンダ動画に出演させられているとみられる。

これまでキャントリー氏は10以上の動画に出演するだけではなく、ISの機関紙「ダービック」にキャントリー氏が書いたと思われるいくつかのコラムを掲載している。キャントリー氏が強制されて書かされたたものなのか、自ら進んで書いたのか確かめることはできない。

ジョン・キャントリー氏がなぜこれほど痩せてしまったのかは分からない。モスルは食糧難ではないし、戦闘員たちは食事を十分とっている。

キャントリー氏の体重が落ち、痩せこけた外見からは、何か危害を加えられたり拷問を受けているのではないかという懸念が高まる。彼が最後に出演した3月の動画と比べると、髪は伸び、乱れている。

映像の中で、彼はサンダルを履き、くるぶしの見える黒のカプリ風パンツをはいている。これは暴力を推奨しイスラムの教えを歪めている、典型的なIS戦闘員の服装だ。

ジャーナリストやそれ以外の多くの人たちが、SNSで公開された動画をフォローし、キャントリー氏の外見から感じた恐怖をコメントした。しかし同時にまだ彼が生きているという、心の底に溜めていた安堵の気持ちもコメントしている。

過激派の人質は大半が首を斬り落とされたり、爆殺されたり、生きたまま焼かれたり、溺死させられるという、ぞっとするような運命をたどる。しかし、キャントリー氏の場合は3年以上監禁されているにもかかわらず、まだ生きている。

キャントリー氏は2012年7月にシリアで初めて拉致されたが、ぎりぎりのところで自由シリア軍の助けで逃げることができた。しかし数カ月後、取材の続きをするためシリアへ戻ることにした。

キャントリー氏とアメリカ人ジャーナリストのジェームズ・フォーリー氏はその年の11月22日、トルコからシリアへ渡った後行方不明になった。2人を拉致した過激派の戦闘員たちは後にISと呼ばれるようになる。

ISがフォーリー氏の首を無残にはねた場面は、2014年8月19日に公開されたプロパガンダ動画によって拡散された

テロリストグループが外国から来た支援者やジャーナリストを残忍な方法で殺害したことに多くの関心が集まっているが、ISの犠牲者のほとんどはシリア人とイラク人のイスラム教徒だ。

スンニ派とシーア派のイスラム教徒は7月6日、バグダッドで祈りに参加していた。その日は「イド・アル=フィトル 」というイスラム教徒にとって聖なる月ラマダンが終わる日で、その場にISが車による自爆テロを起こした。複数のテロで300人近くが亡くなり、200人が負傷した。
