水泳の世界選手権第11日は8月3日、ロシアのカザニで行われ、競泳の女子200メートル個人メドレー決勝で渡部香生子（JSS立石）が日本新記録の2分8秒45ので銀メダルを獲得した。日本選手が同種目でメダルを取るのは、オリンピックを含めて初めて。
スポニチは次のように伝えている。
１８歳が歴史を塗り替えた。日本女子が表彰台からの景色を見ることができなかった２００メートル個人メドレーで、渡部が涙の銀メダルだ。「こんなタイムが出るとは思っていなかったし、銀メダルが獲れると思っていなかったので、本当にうれしい」と声をふるわせた。５位通過した１００メートル平泳ぎ準決勝から、わずか４０分。それにもかかわらず、準決勝に続いて決勝でも日本記録を更新した。１００メートルのターンは最下位だったが、専門の平泳ぎで４位まで追い上げると、最後の自由形で大逆転。電光掲示板で順位を確認すると、右手で水面を叩き、喜んだ。
