テニスの錦織圭選手が、アメリカのフロリダ州で行なわれたソニー・オープン男子シングルス準々決勝で、元世界ランキング1位で現在5位のロジャー・フェデラー選手を破り、ベスト4に食い込んだ。錦織選手が破ったフェデラー選手とは、どんな選手なのだろうか。

テニスの錦織圭選手が、アメリカのフロリダ州で行なわれたソニー・オープン男子シングルス準々決勝で、ロジャー・フェデラー選手に対して逆転勝利を収め、ベスト4に食い込んだ。MSN産経ニュースが報じた。

テニスのソニー・オープンは26日、米フロリダ州マイアミで行われ、男子シングルス準々決勝で世界ランキング21位の錦織圭(日清食品)が元世界1位の第5シード、ロジャー・フェデラー(スイス)を3-6、7-5、6-4で破り、4強入りを決めた。

現在世界ランキング5位で、長らく世界のトップに君臨し続けてきた王者フェデラーに勝利した錦織選手は、試合後次のように答えた。

ソニー・オープン男子シングルス準々決勝(26日、米フロリダ州マイアミ)錦織がフェレール(スペイン)に勝った4回戦に続き、今度はフェデラーを破る番狂わせを演じた。2日続けて世界ランキングのトップ5選手を連破し「率直にうれしい。いい勝利ですね」と目を輝かせた。

ウィンブルドン選手権と全米オープンで、それぞれ5連覇を果たすなど、4大国際大会で通算17回の優勝を収め、男子シングルス世界最多勝利記録を所持している。

さらに、2004年から2012年までの合計302週間、世界ランキング1位の王者として君臨し続けた記録は、1位在位最長記録として、未だに破られていない。

他にも、「スポーツ界のアカデミー賞」と呼ばれ、世界中のスポーツ・ジャーナリストの投票で候補者が選ばれる「ローレウス世界スポーツ賞」の男子最優秀選手賞を、史上初の4年連続で受賞するなど、競技の枠組みを超えて、スポーツ界で高く評価されている。

過去に4大国際大会で14回の優勝を果たしたピート・サンプラス選手も、2009年に答えたインタビューの中で、未だかつてない活躍を続けるフェデラー選手を「史上最高の選手」と誉め称えた。

■接戦の戦い、錦織が一歩リード

フェデラー選手のホームページには現在、「HEAD TO HEAD(接戦)」と題されて、錦織選手との対戦記録が掲げられている(※2014年3月28日11時30分現在、画像は削除されている)。

両選手はこれまでに2度対戦しており、戦績は1勝1敗。2011年のスイス・インドア決勝ではフェデラー選手が勝利し、2013年のマドリッド・マスターズ3回戦では錦織選手が勝利した。今回の錦織選手の勝利で、2人の戦績は2勝1敗となり、錦織選手が一歩リードする形となった。

試合後のインタビューでフェデラー選手は、「ケイは素晴らしい技術でボールをコントロールしていた。最高のテニスをしてきた」と錦織選手を賞賛した
