東日本大震災から6年がたった2017年3月11日、震災に伴う津波と火災で壊滅的な被害を受けた宮城・気仙沼の街を歩いた。震災復興がどこまで進んだのか、自分の目で確かめたいと思ったからだ。
この日の気仙沼は快晴に恵まれたが、午後1時の気温は5.1度。沿岸を歩いていると、時おり海風が容赦なく吹き付けた。
市内では土地の区画整理が進み、被災者向けの復興住宅や水産加工施設など、真新しい建物も並んでいる。沿岸部では5mほどの護岸も設置され始めた。こうしてみると、気仙沼の街は日常を取り戻しつつあるかのように見える。
一方で、街を歩いて気付くのは工事の多さだ。いまなお随所で「かさ上げ」工事をしており、空き地も目立つ。
地元のタクシー運転手、村上正徳さん（56）は「復興住宅はあっても、なかなか人が戻ってこないんです。あれから6年が経つけれど、『復興』したとはまだ言えない。買い物があると、仙台までいくことも多い。まだまだ道半ばです」と話す。
気仙沼には震災当時のまま残る建物もある。最上階の4階まで浸水した気仙沼向洋高校。その校舎は、6年前と変わらぬ姿で「あの日」に何があったのか伝えている。4階の壁には、流れてきた冷凍工場の建屋と衝突した跡が生々しく残っている。校舎の一部は「震災遺構」として保存される予定だ。
午後2時46分、気仙沼の街には犠牲者への追悼の祈りを込めたサイレンが鳴り響いた。
