韓国南部の珍島沖で沈没した大型旅客船「セウォル号」は4月18日正午すぎ、水面上に出ていた一部の船体がほぼ水中に沈んだ。
行方不明者の救出作業を続けている対策本部は18日午前10時5分、潜水士が船内の食堂への通路を確保したと明らかにした。船内に取り残されている行方不明者のため、午前10時50分からはゴムホースを通して船内に空気を注入する作業も始まった。聯合ニュースが伝えた。
18日午後1時時点で新たな生存者は確認されていない。死者は28人、行方不明者は268人にのぼっている。
【韓国旅客船沈没事故】
沈没した「セウォル号」の引き揚げのため、2000～3600t級の海上クレーン船4隻が18日午前中に現場付近に到着した。しかし、引き揚げによって船体が揺れると、船内でエアポケットになっている空間に海水が入り込み、取り残されている人の救助ができなくなる恐れもあり、どの段階で引き揚げるかは結論が出ていない。
■船長、事故時は3等航海士に操舵任せていた
沈没した旅客船の船長（69）は、沈没したときは操舵指揮を3等航海士に任せていた。警察、検察の合同捜査本部が4月18日、記者会見で明らかにした。
聯合ニュースによると、この3等航海士は26歳の女性で、経験は1年を少し超えた程度。セウォル号を担当して5カ月だったという。航海士は舵取りの方向を指示する任務を負っており、操舵士は航海士の指示なしに進路を変更できない。
聯合ニュースによると、会見では「船長の勤務時間は正確に決まっていない」と説明があり、船長が操舵指揮を有資格者に任せること自体は違法ではないが、船長は船が沈み始めたとき、しばらく席を外しており、船が傾き始めて戻ってきたという。船長がどこにいたのかは、関係者の供述が食い違っていて捜査中とした。
船長は沈没直後、乗客を置いて先に船を脱出した可能性があり、乗客の安全確保義務を定めた船員法などに違反した疑いで捜査本部の取り調べを受けている。
