アメリカ西部ワシントン州の北部で3月22日に大規模な土砂崩れが発生し、地元紙シアトル・タイムズは地元当局の話として、24日（日本時間25日）までに14人の死亡を確認し、176人が行方不明になっている可能性があると発表した。
時事ドットコムは次の通り伝えている。
現場はシアトルの北約90キロに位置する山あいの町オソ周辺。一帯では1カ月以上激しい雨が続き、地盤が緩んでいた。地滑りは約2．6平方キロにわたって発生し、住宅数十棟が損壊、道路や河川が寸断された。

MSN産経ニュースによると、これまで日本人が巻き込まれたという情報はないという。
郡当局はツイッターで「死者は14人」と発表。乳児を含む多数のけが人がでているという。行方不明者の中には、自力で避難したが、家族と連絡が取れない人も多数いるとみられ、地元当局が所在確認を進めている。
在シアトル日本総領事館によると、これまでに日本人が巻き込まれたという情報はない。
