アメリカ大リーグ、ニューヨーク・ヤンキースの田中将大投手（25）は4月4日（日本時間5日）、カナダのトロントで行われたトロント・ブルージェイズ戦に先発してメジャー初登板を果たし、勝ち投手となった。
大リーグ１勝目は日米通算100勝目だった。2012年から続くレギュラーシーズンでの連勝は「29」となった。試合は７―３でヤンキースが勝った。
時事ドットコムなどによると、1回、いきなり先頭打者にソロ本塁打を浴び、2回にも2失点。序盤はやや苦しんだが、味方打線の効果的な援護もあって立ち直り、7回を6安打3失点（自責点2）と好投した。無四球の内容が光り、8奪三振。
田中は、試合後のインタビューで開口一番、「うれしいです。はい、うれしいです」と満面の笑みで話した。
さらに「前半バタバタしてしまったんですが、徐々にリズムをつかんで投げることができました。（前半は）そこまで緊張という感じではなかったんですが、雰囲気に入り切れていませんでした。回が進むにつれてゲームに入っていけるようになって、集中力も出てきました。中盤から速球系を増やして投げていきましたが、序盤は変化球が多かったです」と語った。
最後に、次の試合への意気込みについて聞かれると「まだ1試合が終わっただけ。どんどんいいピッチングを続けていけるように頑張りますので、応援よろしくお願いします」と力を込めた。
大リーグ初登板初先発での白星は、日本選手では2012年のダルビッシュ有投手（レンジャーズ）以来。
日本野球機構のホームページなどによると、田中は2007年から2013年までの7年間、楽天のエースとして活躍し通算99勝35敗3セーブを記録。昨季は24勝0敗1セーブ、防御率1.27と大活躍、最多勝、最優秀防御率などのタイトルを獲得し、沢村賞にも輝いた。ポストシーズンでも2勝1敗2セーブと大活躍し、楽天を初の日本一に導いた。
1月に新しいポスティング制度を利用し、総額1億5500万ドル（約161億円）でヤンキースと7年契約を結んだ。
