2月18日夜に開催された平昌オリンピックのスピードスケート女子500メートルで、小平奈緒が五輪記録で金メダルを獲得した

試合直後に受けたテレビ局のインタビューで、「闘争心あふれる、まさに獣のような滑りだったと思います」という問いかけを受けて、小平が「獣かどうかは分からないんですけど...」と苦笑する一幕があった。

■「獣かどうかは分からないんですけど...」

小平は息を時折切らしながら「もう周りが何も見えないくらい、すごいうれしかったです」として、以下のようにインタビュアーの質問に答えた。

---そんな中で、この4年間いろんなことがあったと思います。金メダルです。

「(金メダルを)考えないようにしてたこともあったけど、全て報われたような気持ちです」

---結城コーチとの二人三脚もあったと思います。どう伝えたいですか?

「二人三脚ではなくて、学生とか同じチームの人達が私を支えてくださったので、みんなに『ありがとう』と言いたいです」

---今日の滑り、振り返ってどうだったでしょうか?

「最初から集中して、本当に自分の持ち味を出し切れたレースだったかなと思います」

---闘争心あふれる、まさに獣のような滑りだったと思います。

「獣かどうかは分からないんですけど...(苦笑)、躍動感あふれるレースができたかなと思います」
