2014年3月8日に乗員乗客239人を乗せたまま消息を絶ったマレーシア航空370便とみられる翼の残骸が7月２９日、インド洋上のフランス領レユニオン島で見つかり、世界中から調査官が集まっている。
北京行きのボーイング777型機は3月8日午前0時41分、12人の乗員と227人の乗客を乗せてクアラルンプール国際空港を離陸したが、およそ1時間後に消息を絶った。本来のルートとは異なる南に進路をとったとみられる。
レユニオン島の海岸に打ち上げられた飛行機の残骸は、マレーシア航空機のものと一致している。オーストラリアのウォーレン・トラス運輸大臣は今回の発見を「大きな前進だ」と述べた。
リユニオン島で飛行機の翼が発見された近くで、28日朝にスーツケースも発見されている。スーツケースは、飛行機の残骸が発見された同じ日に、「1日間ずっと」その場所に置かれていたという。
飛行機の残骸はトゥールーズのフランス当局が回収し、民間航空の調査官が分析に当たっている。
マレーシアのナジブ・ラザク首相はブログで、「これまで遺族に数々の誤った情報が伝えられていたが、本当の情報を発見し、遺族のみなさんがこの件に幕を引き、安らかになることを願う」と述べた。
