ガルシアさんは2011年のシリア内戦当初から現地に何度も足を運び取材を続けている。IS(イスラム国)によって2013年9月から約6カ月間にわたり拘束され、解放後に再びISと対峙する現場に戻るという精神力も高い評価を得た。

5月26日に東京都で開かれた授与式で、ガルシアさんは、「こうしている間にも、シリアは恥ずべき報道管制のもとにあり、血が流され続けています。死者は31万人を超え、難民は400万人近くにのぼります。さらに700万人以上が、国内避難民となっています。こうした多くの人々の顔をはっきり見えるようにするのが、私たちの伝えるニュースです」と述べた。

あいさつするリカルド・ガルシア・ビラノバさん

選考委員の一人、ジャーナリストの野中章弘さんは、ガルシアさんがISから解放された際に両親が「あなたの仕事は必要なのだから、がんばりなさい」と話したというエピソードを紹介。ガルシアさんが再びシリアに戻って報道を続けたことについて「何を伝えなくてはいけないのか、全くブレがない」と評価した。

また、同じく選考委員で武蔵野美術大学教授・探検家の関野吉晴さんは「ガルシアさんが日本人だったら、イスラム国から解放されなかったのではないか」として次のようにコメントした。

「スペイン人であったから解放されたのであって、日本人であったら政府はなにもしないで殺されたかもしれないと、私は思います。日本では危険なところに行くなという世論が高まっており、政府もそう言っている。しかし、スペイン政府はガルシアさんを(ISから)解放した上に、彼の仕事が必要だと思って、その後、彼がアフリカやイラク、シリアに行くことを止めたりはしなかった。そんなスペイン政府と、日本政府の違いを強く感じました」
