ミャンマー軍のミン・アウン・フライン総司令官は、11月8日に実施される同国の総選挙の結果を尊重すると、繰り返し表明した。民政移管後初となる今度の選挙はミャンマーの民主化改革の重要な試金石とみられている。

総司令官によると、国軍の主要な関心事は、投票が公正に実施されることや、アウン・サン・スー・チー氏率いる野党・国民民主連盟(NLD)が過半数を獲得したとしても、すべての国民が投票結果を尊重することだという。

ミャンマーの近年の選挙は軍の介入を許してきた。1990年にはNLDが圧勝したが、軍事政権がその結果を認めなかった。2010年の総選挙は不正が予想されたため、NLD側がボイコットした。

ミャンマーは2011年に49年続いた軍政に終止符を打ち、見かけ上は民政移管を果たしたが、連邦議会の議席の4分の1が軍人に割り当てられ、憲法改正案に事実上の拒否権を行使できるなど、依然として国軍が強い影響力を保っている。

総司令官は「適切な時期に」国軍はこの立場から身を引くとし、「平和や安定、平穏さがこの国に行き渡れば、役割も変化するだろう」と述べた。[ネピドー 25日 ロイター]
