アメリカ航空宇宙局（NASA）は、4月の世界の気温と海水温が観測史上最高を記録したことを発表した。このまま推移すれば、2016年の年間平均が記録を更新し、「史上最も暑い年」となる可能性がある。
NASAの気象学者ギャビン・シュミット博士は5月14日、「4月の観測結果からすると、99％の確率で2016年は観測史上最高になる」とTwitterで指摘した。
CNNによると、4月の気温と海水温はNASAが基準としている1951～80年の4月の平均値に比べ、1.11度の上昇を記録していた。平均値を1度以上も上回るのは、これで連続7カ月目となった。
太平洋に発生した巨大なエルニーニョの発生が原因の一つと見られているが、地球温暖化の影響も考えられている。
地球温暖化対策をめぐっては、2015年12月に新たな国際ルールの枠組みとして「パリ協定」が採択され、4月に署名式が開かれた。5月16日からはドイツ・ボンで、具体的なルール作りに向けた10日間の会合が始まっている。
