ネパール中部で4月25日、マグニチュード7.9の強い地震があり、多数の死者が出ている。
ロイター通信によると、ネパール第2の都市ポッカラの東約80kmの地点で、マグニチュード7.9の地震が発生した。ネパールの警察当局は、少なくとも2460人が死亡し、6492人が負傷したことを明らかにした。死者の1100人以上が首都カトマンズで発生している。
現地では夜を徹して救助作業をしたが、救援物資の不足で難航しており、がれきに埋もれた生存者を手作業で救い出している。古く脆弱な構造の家屋に多くの人が住んでおり、夜間に余震を恐れて寒い中を屋外で過ごす人が多かったという。
ネパールの救急救命士は、カトマンズのビル病院で300人から350人の重傷者が運び込まれ、その多くが死亡したと証言した。医療用品は不足しており、近所の店舗から材料を集めて薬を作るなどしているという。
インド政府によると、この地震でインドでも66人が、倒壊した家屋の下敷きになるなどして死亡した。バングラデシュでも2人が死亡した。新華社通信は、チベット自治区で18人が死亡したとしている。
エベレストで雪崩、Google幹部も巻き込まれ死亡
また、観光シーズンのネパールでは、約30万人の外国人観光客が国内に滞在していると推定されている。世界最高峰のエベレスト周辺には約1000人の登山客やシェルパ（案内人）がいたとみられるが、雪崩が起き、インド軍によると17人の遺体を収容した。
NHKによると、エベレスト周辺で登山をしていた日本人2人が雪崩に巻き込まれ、50代男性1人の死亡が確認された。もう1人の50代女性も負傷したが命に別条はないという。
また、NHKは、Googleの研究開発部門を率いてきたダン・フレディンバーグ氏も、雪崩に巻き込まれて死亡したと報じている。
世界遺産のダラハラ塔が倒壊
この地震で、ユネスコ（国連教育科学文化機関）が世界文化遺産に指定した、1832年建造のダラハラ塔（高さ約60m）が倒壊した。10年前から観光客に内部を開放しており、警察によると、200人近い人が巻き込まれたという。

ネパールでは1934年にもマグニチュード8.3と推定される地震が発生し、8500人以上が死亡している。
日本など救急援助隊を派遣
ネパールのMinendra Rijal情報・通信相はインドのテレビに対し「大規模な復旧計画を立ち上げた。我が国はいま、危機にあり、多くの支援を必要としている」と語った。インドは285人の災害援助部隊を派遣したほか、アメリカのケリー国務長官は声明を発表し、100万ドルの緊急支援と、レスキュー部隊の派遣方針を明らかにした。イギリスやインド、パキスタンもレスキュー部隊や援助物資を送った。
NHKによると、日本政府も、ネパール政府からの要請を受け、計約70人の国際緊急援助隊・救助チームを派遣したほか、テントや毛布など2500万円相当の援助物資を送ることを決めた。
