■クーデターの陸軍将校、近衛師団長を殺害

森赳・近衛師団長

皇居を護衛する森赳・近衛師団長に対し、「ポツダム宣言受諾阻止」のためのクーデターを企てた一部陸軍将校が、決起に加わるよう説得を試みる。色よい返事をしない森と、同席していた白石通教・第二総軍参謀を、畑中健二少佐、窪田兼三少佐、上原重太郎大尉が斬殺。「皇居を包囲して通信網を遮断し、東京放送局を占拠する」と、偽の師団長命令を発する。(宮城事件)

玉音放送の録音を終え帰宅途中の下村宏・内閣情報局総裁や東京放送局員ら17人が近衛師団の兵士に監禁される。目的は玉音放送を録音したレコード(玉音盤)を奪取することにあった。近衛師団の部隊が宮内省内で玉音盤の捜索を始める。

宮内省で雅楽を学んでいた嶋田英康さん(87)は防空監視隊員として敵機を警戒していた。

防空本部から呼び出され、はしごで地面に下り立った瞬間、「誰だ!」と背後から声をかけられた。同時に、尻に鋭い痛み。近衛兵が銃剣を突き付けていた。

そのまま防空本部に連行されると、そこには宮内省の職員ら約50人が数人の近衛兵に銃剣を突きつけられていた。

1人の将校が軍刀で電話線を切り始めた。外部との連絡がとれないようにするためだった。嶋田さんは、身動きがとれず、反乱軍が鎮圧される明け方まで立ったまま過ごした。

畑中少佐の宮城事件に呼応した佐々木武雄・陸軍予備役大尉が、兵士・学生ら約40人の「国民神風隊」を率いて決起。首相官邸の玄関へ軽機関銃を乱射し、重油を撒いて火をつけて逃走する。鈴木貫太郎首相は私邸に宿泊しており難を逃れる。

東京放送局の放送会館を反乱軍が包囲。宿直職員を軟禁。反乱軍の声明を放送させるよう要求するが拒否される。

田中静壱・東部軍司令官、近衛師団に到着。反乱軍兵士の検挙を命じる。

鈴木貫太郎首相はこの日、昭和天皇に閣僚の辞表を提出、内閣総辞職した。
