地元紙ラ・プレンサによると、近隣の住民は大きな爆発音を聞いた後、火山からガスと火山灰が吹き上がるのを見たという

この噴火で周辺地域にある12の学校が休校したが、今のところ負傷者や死亡者に関する報道はない。

AP通信によれば、モモトンボはニカラグアの首都マナグワから約48キロほど離れた場所に位置する火山で、同国第2位の大都市・レオン近郊にある。同地域には約3,500人の住人が暮らしている。

11月初旬には、約500キロ離れたグアテマラのフエゴ火山が噴火していた。この噴火では少なくとも6つの村が火山灰で覆い尽くされ、近くのホテルに泊まっていた宿泊客は強制避難せざるを得なかったという。
