テニスの全豪オープン第5日は1月22日、メルボルンで行われ、男子シングルス3回戦で世界ランキング7位で第7シードの錦織圭（日清食品）が、世界ランキング27位のギリェルモ・ガルシアロペス（スペイン）を7―5、2―6、6―3、6―4で下し、5年連続でベスト16となる4回戦に進出した。時事ドットコムなどが報じた。
第１セットを先取した世界ランキング７位の錦織は、第２セットを２－６で落とし今大会で初めてセットを失った。第３セットは第６ゲームをブレークするなどして制し、第４セットは第１サーブを修正して世界２７位の相手を退けた。
