米ワイオミング州などにまたがるイエローストーン国立公園で、酸性の熱水泉に観光客の男性が誤って転落して死亡し、遺体が溶解してなくなる事故が起きた。

アメリカ・ワイオミング州などにまたがるイエローストーン国立公園で、酸性の熱水泉に観光客の男性が誤って転落して死亡し、遺体が溶解してなくなる事故が起きた。CNNなどが11月18日に報じた。


公園管理当局によると、オレゴン州のコリン・スコットさん(当時23)は今年6月、家族と2人でイエローストンを訪れ、温泉浴ができる場所を探してノリス間欠泉近くの立入禁止区域に侵入した。泉を見付けたスコットさんは温度をチェックしようと手を伸ばし、足を滑らせて泉の中に転落。駆け付けた救急隊が泉の底に沈んでいるスコットさんを発見したものの、付近一帯は当時、雷雨に見舞われていたことから引き揚げることはできなかった。

翌日現場に戻ってみると、泉の底にあった遺体は消えてなくなっていた。「あっという間に溶解が進んだ」と森林監視員の責任者は話す。

イエローストーン国立公園で、熱水泉に入ることは法律で禁止されている。当局は、遺族への配慮から動画を公表しておらず、内容についても公には説明していないとBBCは伝えた。

AFPによると、イエローストーン国立公園は、アメリカで最も来訪者が多い国立公園の一つ。国立公園の歴史に詳しい専門家によると、1870年以降、子供7人を含む22人が約120度に達することもある同国立公園の熱水泉で死亡しているという。
