ニュージーランドの南島で11月14日午前0時2分（日本時間13日午後8時2分）ごろ、マグニチュード7.8の地震が発生した。震源の深さは23キロ。アメリカ地質調査所が発表した。

ニュージーランドの災害対策当局は午前1時すぎ、南島と北島東部の沿岸部に津波警報を発令した。現地では強い余震が続いており、一部地域では地割れや停電などが報告されている。
ニュージーランド南島の北東部沿岸では津波の第1波が観測された。防災当局は津波に警戒する必要があるとして、海岸沿いの住民に避難を呼びかけている。また、震源付近では場所によって3m〜5mの津波も予測されるとして、高台に避難するよう呼びかけている。
太平洋津波警報センターによると、震源近くの街カイコウラの海岸で最大およそ1m50cmの津波を観測した。
現地紙ニュージーランド・ヘラルドによると、「ウェリントンではサイレンが鳴り、通ばたで泣き叫んでいる人がいる」と伝えている。

ニュージーランドでは2011年にもM6.3の大地震が発生し、第二の都市クライストチャーチでは街の大聖堂をはじめ多数の家屋が損壊。留学生ら日本人28人を含む185人の死者が出るなどの甚大な被害に見舞われた。
