パリで発生した同時多発テロを受け、2016年のアメリカ大統領選に立候補している共和党候補らが、オバマ大統領のシリア難民の受け入れ計画を批判している。これに対してオバマ大統領は11月16日、G20サミット後に記者会見し、「必死に安全を求めている難民を歓迎する」と述べ、難民受け入れを続ける考えを示した。

オバマ大統領は9月、増加するシリアなどからの難民について、アメリカでも今後1年間に少なくとも1万人を受け入れるよう指示。アメリカ国内からは、受入人数を増やすべきだとする声もあれば、テロリストが難民を装って国内に入り込むとの懸念も出ていた

今回の事件を受け、アメリカの20以上の州の知事が、安全対策が十分ではないなどとして受け入れを拒否する声明などを発表。大統領選挙に立候補しているルイジアナ州のボビー・ジンダル知事は、「シリアの難民の移住に向けたあらゆる手続きを中止するように指示を出した」と述べた。

さらに、共和党の大統領選候補は一斉にオバマ大統領を批判。世論調査で支持率首位を争う実業家のドナルド・トランプ氏は、難民受け入れは「正気ではない」と批判。同じく大統領選に名乗りを上げているマルコ・ルビオ上院議員ジェブ・ブッシュ元フロリダ州知事も、受け入れには否定的な考えを表明した。

これらの受け入れ批判に対し、オバマ大統領は記者会見で「これらの難民の多くは、テロの犠牲者であることを忘れてはいけない」とコメント。「彼らの目の前でドアを閉めることは、価値観の裏切りになる。私たちの国は、安全を渇望する人々は受け入れることができ、そして、わたしたちのセキュリティシステムは保証できるものだ」と述べた。

さらに、「なかには、キリスト教徒だけ受け入れて、イスラム教徒の受け入れは拒むべきだと言う人もいる。政治家の中にも、内戦から逃れてきた人については、宗教テストを行うべきだと主張する人もいる。彼らのなかには、政治的な迫害から保護された経緯のある家の出身者もいるというのに、恥ずかしくないのか。そんなのはアメリカ人ではない」と述べ、難民を受け入れるべきではないとする考えを強く批判した。
