オバマ大統領は毎年2月の第1木曜日に開かれる、議会とキリスト教関係者の会合「National Prayer Breakfast」でスピーチし、出席者に対し、「虚しい目的のために我々の信仰を攻撃する者たちと戦う」ことを強く訴え、過激派組織ダーイシュ(「イスラム国」)を「死のカルト」と非難、パリで起きたテロ攻撃とパキスタン・ペシャワールの学校襲撃事件にも同様に言及した。

「我々の信仰は、誤解され、歪められる傾向がある。現代社会においては、ヘイト(憎悪)に満ちたグループがツイッター・アカウントを所有し、サイバー空間の隠れた場所で偏見が渦巻いている。そうした不寛容に対抗することは、さらに難しいかもしれない」と、大統領は語った。

オバマ大統領は「我々は謙遜であるべきといった基本的な倫理に基づき、自らの言論の自由と信仰の自由、そして他者の権利も守らなければならない」と述べた。

「これらの権利を守ることに関心を持つことで、我々一人ひとりが、他者への敬意、自制、そして判断を学び、他者の信仰を侮辱する権利を正しいとするならば、我々は同様に言論の自由でそうした侮辱を非難し、宗教コミュニティー、特に、攻撃の標的となる少数のコミュニティーと協力して抵抗しなければならない」と彼は訴えた。

オバマ大統領は、チベット仏教ダライ・ラマ14世、ヴァレリー・ジャレット大統領上級顧問ら、政治家や宗教指導者を含む出席者に対し「言論の自由は他者を守るためにあるべきだ」と語った。

「単に何か発言する権利があるということは、言論の自由をたてに他者を侮辱してよいことにはならない」と、大統領は述べている。「あらゆる信仰を持つ人々が完全に平等な国家の一員として歓迎されていると実感したとき、アメリカはより強くなることを我々は理解している」。

大統領は背景として、アメリカ独立当時の指導者たちが、宗教と政治を明確に分離したことにも触れた。

「彼らはまた、言論の自由の必要性を理解していた」とオバマ大統領は続けた。「言論の自由と宗教の自由はつながっている。誰かを守るという口実で他の誰かの権利を侵害することは、両方の自由に背く行為だ」
