オバマ大統領は8月28日、「シリアのアサド政権が化学兵器を使用した」と明言した。
オバマ米大統領は２８日、公共テレビ（ＰＢＳ）のインタビューに応じ、シリアでの化学兵器攻撃について「シリア政府が実施したと結論付けた」と述べ、国際規範を破ったアサド政権の責任を追及するため、軍事介入を検討していることを明らかにした。ただ大統領は介入の具体策について「まだ決定を下していない」と語った上で、限定的規模にとどめる意向を示した。

シリアのアサド政権は、反体制派に対して化学兵器を使用して弾圧したとみられている。アメリカは国連安保理の全会一致を経ずに軍事介入する準備を進めており、イギリス、フランスも追従する姿勢を見せている。
一方、国連とロシア、中国、同じシーア派でアサド政権と結びつきが強いイランは軍事介入に反対の立場だ。
ヘイグ英外相は２８日、「国連安全保障理事会がシリアに対する責任を負うべき時が来た」と語っていた。これに対してロシアは、シリア政府が化学兵器を使ったという証拠はないと強調しており、決議案に対して拒否権を行使する見通しだ。中国も武力行使に反対する公算が大きい。

日本では28日、安倍首相が訪問先のカタールで、アサド政権に退陣を要求。菅義偉官房長官も「米国をはじめとする関係諸国と緊密に連携を取りながら、引き続き強い懸念を持って事態を注視していきたい」とコメントし、アメリカとの協調姿勢を明確にしている。
