マティーン容疑者は6月12日午前2時ごろ、オーランドの同性愛者向けナイトクラブ「パルス」に一時、人質を取って立てこもり、警察との銃撃戦の末、射殺されたという。この事件でこれまでに50人が死亡し53人が負傷した。アメリカで起きた一度の銃撃事件としては、2007年のバージニア工科大の銃乱射事件の32人の死者数を上回り、過去最悪の被害となった。

■「男性同士のキスを見て激怒」父親が語る

CBSによるとマティーン容疑者は、ニューヨーク生まれでオーランドから200kmほど南東にある街に住んでいた。両親はアフガニスタン出身だった。彼は事件前後に警察に緊急通報し、「イスラム国」(IS)への忠誠を誓ったほか、2013年に起きたボストン・マラソン爆弾テロの実行犯にも言及していたという。

USA TODAYによると、2013年にマティーン容疑者は「同僚への攻撃的な言動」をしたことや、2014年のフロリダ出身者がシリアで自爆テロを起こした事件に関連してFBIが注目したことがあったが、現在は監視・捜査の対象にはなっていなかった。

NBS NEWSは、マティーン容疑者の父親が次のように語っていたと報じた。

マイアミの浜辺に彼が妻と子供と行ったときに、2人の男がキスしているのを見て激怒していました。「あれを見ろ、俺の子供の前であんなことをするなんて」

その上で「このような事件になったことを深く謝罪しています。どうして彼がこんなことをしたのか全く分かりません。アメリカ中と同じように私もショックを受けています」と話した。また、事件について「(イスラム教の)信仰とは関係ないと思います」とコメントしたという。

この事件に関してISは、組織が運営する通信社「Amaq」を通じて「ナイトクラブへの武装襲撃は、ISの兵士によるものだ」と犯行声明を出している。
