有機農業は、農薬や化学肥料を使う一般の農法に比べて手間がかかるし、利益も少ないと思われがちだ。しかし最近の研究から、有機農業でも十分な収入が期待できるということが分かってきた。
「有機農業は一般の農法よりも利益をあげられるか」を調べたのは、ワシントン州立大学の研究者、デヴィッド・W・クラウダー氏とジョン・P・レガノルド氏だ。彼らはこれまでに行われた14カ国・129の農業経済の研究を分析し、その結果を「米国科学アカデミー紀要」に発表した。彼らが出した結論は「有機農業は一般の農法よりも高い収益をあげられる」だ。
研究は、有機農業と一般の農法にかかる経済的要素を分析している。まず収穫量は有機栽培の方が18%少なかった。これは有機農業を批判する人たちの主張している通りだ。また人件費は有機農業の方が高かった。一方で、化学肥料や農薬など、農作物を育てるためにかかる費用は有機農業の方がはるかに少なかった。その結果、農地1エーカーあたりの費用の総額は、2つの農業方式でほぼ同じになった。
こういった要素を計算すると、売上高と費用の額が等しくなる「損益分岐点」は、有機農業の方が5~7%高いことがわかった。損益分岐点が低い方が利益は多くなるため、この結果は、有機農業に不利ということになる。
しかし、今回の分析でもう一つ分かったことがある。それは、3割程度値段が高くても消費者は有機食品を買おうとすることだ。この3割は有機農法と一般の農法の損益分岐点の差を大きく上回るため、収益において有機農業に軍配があがることになる。
有機農業が増えれば有機食品の価格も下がるはずだ、と指摘する人もいるかもしれない。クラウダー氏らによると、世界の耕地面積のうち、現在有機農業が占める割合はわずか1%だ。この面積がたとえば2倍になったら、供給量が増えて価格が下がることも考えられる。
ただし今回の調査で調べていないこともある。それは環境への長期的な影響だ。
これまで多くの研究によって、有機農業が一般の農法よりも環境にやさしい農法であることが示されてきた。有機農業は土壌の浸食を減らし、農薬なしの自然な方法での害虫駆除を促進し、ハチなどの花粉を運ぶ昆虫を増やし、そして有害な農薬の流出を防ぐ。
こういった利点は、農家だけでなく社会全体に対して経済的利益をもたらすので、それを計算に入れると、有機農業の方が経済的な利益が大きくなる、とクラウダー氏らは述べている。
こういった経済面・環境面での利益を考えると、有機農業の未来は明るいかもしれない。実際、アメリカでは有機農業が急増しているというが、それも不思議ではない。
