アメリカ地質調査所は、イタリアのペルージャ付近で8月24日午前3時36分(日本時間午前10時36分)にマグニチュード6.2の地震が発生したと発表した。震源の深さは10キロメートルと非常に浅い。CNNによると、震源はペルージャ県ノルチャ南東の10キロの地点。

現地紙のラ・レプッブリカは、イタリア中部の広い地域で揺れが感じられ、首都ローマでも多くの建物が20秒間にわたって揺れたと速報した。

BBCによると、イタリア首相府報道官は「政府は災害対策関係当局と連絡を取り合っている」と声明を出した。またBBCは、イタリア当局の話として「大勢が瓦礫の下に閉じ込められている」と伝えた。

NHKニュースによると、現地では救助隊などが瓦礫の下に取り残された人を助け出す作業を進めているが、現場付近が山あいのため、救助活動や被害状況の把握が難航している。

2009年にイタリア中部ラクイラで起きたM6.3の地震では300人以上が死亡している
