ソチ五輪のフィギュアスケート、男子シングルで、ロシア唯一の代表だったエフゲニー・プルシェンコ（３１）が棄権したことは、ロシア国内で大きな波紋を呼んでいる。
世界選手権を４回制覇したカナダのカート・ブラウニング氏は、プルシェンコが棄権して退場した瞬間の会場の空気は「リンクが崩れ落ちたかのようだった」と証言。「素晴らしいキャリアの最後が、総立ちの拍手に囲まれてのものでなくて残念だ」と話した。
プルシェンコを長く指導したアレクセイ・ミーシン氏は「あまり批判しないでほしい。勝利したことのほうが多い」と弁解しているが、批判は膨らんでいる様子。
元金メダリストのイリーナ・ロドニナさんは「スポーツマンシップを欠く行為だった」と批判し、テレビ解説者のチェルダンツェフ氏は、「すべて仕組まれていたように感じてしまう」とコメント。政界からはジリノフスキー氏が「この故障を負った人間によって、国に恥が注がれた」と痛烈な言葉を発した。
一方で、ロシアのフィギュアスケート連盟は声明で「彼は団体ですべてを出し尽くしたし、プロスポーツに故障はつきもの。なぜこんなに批判が多いのかわからない」とコメント。ロシア選手権を制した１８歳のマキシム・コフトゥンよりも、２００６年トリノ五輪金メダリストのプルシェンコの経験を優先させたことは間違いでなかったとの見解を示した。
