「住む家がないことを社会的・道徳的に正当化することはできません。イエス・キリストは、すべての人に自分が共にいると伝えたかった。すべての人にご自身の友情、支え、愛を感じて欲しかった。苦しむ人、悲しみの涙を流す人、そして不当な仕打ちを受ける人をご自身と重ねられた。彼はこのように話しています『私が空腹だった時、あなたは私に食べ物を与えてくれた。私の喉が渇いていた時、私に飲み物を与えてくれた。私が見知らぬ者であった時、私を歓迎してくれた』」

セント・マリア・ミールズ・プログラムは、毎週水曜日にワシントンD.C.で実施されている。カトリック慈善団体の建物の外にテントを張り、ボランティアが約300人の生活に苦しむ人々に温かい食事を配っているのだ。

法王が訪ねてきた時は、押し寄せる多くの群衆を収容するために街の一角が閉鎖された。昼食にはシェフたちが、チキンとパスタ、それに自家製のデザートを準備した。ワシントンD.C.のカトリック慈善団体CEOモンシニョール・ジョン・エンツラー氏は、ボルチモアのテレビ局WBAL-TVに食事は「簡単に準備でき、健康的で、栄養価が高いもの」を作るようにしていると話した。

今回の訪問は、社会の底辺にいる人に手を差し伸べ、貧しい人を助けたいという法王フランシスコの願いを表している。これまでにも法王のリーダーシップの下、ローマ法王庁はサン・ピエトロ広場に無料で散髪やひげ剃りのできるシャワー施設を開設した。また、一度に30人分の食事を提供できるホームレス用シェルターをローマに建設中だ。

3月には、法王の代わりに慈善事業をする慈善家が、ホームレスの一団をシスティーナ礼拝堂のプライベートツアーとバチカン美術館での夕食に招待した。法王もツアーに予告なしに立ち寄って一団を驚かせ、ホームレスの一人一人と挨拶を交わした。
