シーア派の大国イランの首都テヘランで1月2日、サウジアラビアがイスラム教シーア派指導者ニムル師を処刑したことに抗議する群衆が、サウジ大使館を襲撃し、火を放つなどした。シリア情勢などを巡って対立する両国の関係が、一層悪化することが懸念される。毎日新聞などが報じた。
サウジアラビアは1月2日、テロに関与したとされる47人の死刑を執行。大半は国際武装組織「アルカイダ」の攻撃に関与したイスラム教スンニ派の過激派だが、シーア派の有力指導者ニムル師も含まれていた。
群衆は、大使館を襲撃し家具などを壊したほか、サウジ国旗を引きずり下ろすなどした。イラン北東部にあるシーア派の聖地マシャドでも、抗議する群衆がサウジ領事館に放火した。
ロイターによれば、イランの最高指導者ハメネイ師のサイトは、サウジの死刑執行者の隣に、過激派組織「IS」（イスラム国）の覆面男、通称「ジハーディ・ジョン」を並べた写真を掲載し、「違いはあるのか」とする言葉を添えた。
サウジアラビアがシーア派指導者らの死刑を執行したことを受けて、国連の潘基文（パン・ギムン）事務総長は2日、声明を発表。「非常に失望している。シーア派の指導者の処遇を巡っては、これまで再三サウジアラビア側に働きかけてきた。国際社会で死刑を廃止する動きが広がるなか、改めてすべての死刑囚に対する刑を減刑するよう求める」と懸念を表明した。
