サーファーは発明した。愛する海を守るために――。ゴミを自動収集する「Seabin」とは？

俺たちの海が汚れるのは、許せない――。

オーストラリアに住むサーファー2人が発明したのは、海のゴミを自動的に集める「Seabin」だった。ピート・セグリンスキさんと、アンドリュー・タートンさんは幼い頃から海を遊び場にしていたが、ビニール袋などの海に漂うゴミには我慢ならなかった。持続可能な解決方法を見いだすために、職を辞して取り組んだのだ。

仕組みは簡単。海に設置したゴミ箱が、海水ごとゴミを飲み込む。そして、ゴミ箱の底のパイプから、ろ過装置を通り、海水だけが海に戻されるというものだ。

このゴミ箱の優れたところは、24時間稼働できる点と、小魚を吸い込むほどの吸引力はないという点。2人がテストした4年間では、ゴミ箱が魚を捕まえたことはないという。海のクリーン運動には、太平洋に長さ約100kmのフェンスを設置しようするボイヤン・スラットさんによるプロジェクト「オーシャン・クリーンアップ」があるが、こちらは大規模プロジェクトなので実現に時間がかかっている。

「Seabin」は現在、クラウドファンディングで資金調達中。成功すれば、2016年半ばには、商品化される見込みだ。
