アメリカ・マサチューセッツ州にある名門女子大「スミス大学」が5月2日、トランスジェンダーの学生の入学を2015年秋入学から許可すると発表した。男性に生まれたが、女性としてのアイデンティティを持つ学生は入学の対象となる。一方で、女性に生まれた後に男性のアイデンティティを持つ学生の入学は許可されない。
発表文は、「設立以来、女性のアイデンティティの概念は進化してきた」と主張。今回の決定でも「女子大学としての使命とアイデンティティは変わらない」とした。
スミス大学は、アメリカで「アイビーリーグ」と呼ばれる名門大学郡の"妹校"とされるセブンシスターズ7校のなかで、最大規模を誇る名門校。栄陽子留学研究所によると、アメリカのフェミニズム運動の学生拠点でもあるという。
トランスジェンダーでスミス大へ入学を希望する学生はこれまでにもいたが、大学側が認めなかった。大学側は在籍する生徒や卒業生、保護者らから意見を募集するなどして検討。専門家の意見を聞いた上で、理事会の投票を経て決定した。
