希少動物の精子をフリーズドライ保存＝京大と京都市動物園がバンク創設

希少動物の精子をフリーズドライにして保存するバンクを、京都大と京都市動物園がはじめたと8月27日発表された。すでにチンパンジーなどで保存に成功しているという。

京都大は２７日、希少な野生動物を保護するため、精子をフリーズドライにして保存するバンクを京都市動物園と協力して始めたと発表した。すでにチンパンジーなどで保存に成功。絶滅危惧種の精子をフリーズドライにしたのは世界初という。

京大の金子武人特定講師（生殖工学）らは、インスタントみそ汁などのフリーズドライ（真空凍結乾燥）技術でラットの精子を５年間保存することに成功している。今回は絶滅危惧種のチンパンジーや小型のサル「スローロリス」、希少動物のキリンの精子を同じ方法でフリーズドライにした。約１カ月後に水で戻してから卵子に顕微授精し、受精能力が保たれていることを確かめた。

精子の保存には、液体窒素などで極低温に冷やす凍結保存法がこれまで使われてきた。フリーズドライは４度の冷蔵庫で保存でき、費用が安い。災害などで停電になっても３カ月間は室温で保たせられる。

今後はほかの種にも試すほか、フリーズドライ精子から実際にチンパンジーを誕生させることなども計画している。ほかの動物園にも協力を呼びかけていくという。
