知的生命体の発見を目的にした宇宙探査の新規事業を、スティーヴン・ホーキング博士が支持した。

ホーキング博士とロシアの大富豪ユーリ・ミリネル氏はロンドンの王立協会で、地球外知的生命体の手掛かりを調査するため、1億ドルをかけた新計画を発表した。BBCニュースによると、今回の地球外知的生命体探索プロジェクト「ブレークスルー・イニシアティブ」のひとつとして「ブレークスルー・リッスン」と名付けられた。もう一つのプロジェクトは人類とデジタルメッセージを作成する「ブレークスルー・メッセージ」。

「ブレークスルーリッスンで、私たちはシリコンバレーで使われている手法を宇宙の知的生命体調査に用いることを約束します」と、ミルネル氏は声明で述べた。「私たちが行うデータへのアプローチはオープンであり、ソーシャルネットワークの問題解決力の利点を利用します」

「宇宙のどこかでおそらく、知的生命体が私たちの灯りを見て、その意味に気づいているのかもしれない」とホーキング博士は述べた。「地球外生命体を探す手がかりを見つける時が来た」

この10カ年計画は数十億の高周波を高感度望遠鏡と先進的計算技術で検出し、分析する。ロイターによると、科学者の中には、人間が無線信号を利用する事実があるのだから、他の知的生命体も同様にそれを利用する可能性があると考えている。

他にもこの計画を支持している科学者がいる。天文学者で、カリフォルニア州マウンテンビューのSETI(地球外知的生命体探査)研究所上級研究員のセス・ショスタック博士もその1人だ。

「これはSETI研究所にとって、1993年にNASAがSETI計画を打ち切って以来、最も大きな前進だ」と、ショスタック博士はメールでハフポストUS版に述べた。「この計画で資金的な安定と、長期的な試みが可能になるという恩恵が得られる。これはまさに過去20年間できなかったことだ。願わくば、今回の計画にSETI研究所の取り組みも加えてもらいたい」

ミリネル氏によると、この研究は透明性があり、オープンソースのソフトウェアを利用するので、そこで発見されたことは世界中の天文ファンに共有されるという
