2015年9月、トルコの海岸に横たわる幼いシリア少年の遺体の写真が、世界に波紋を広げた。あれから5カ月が経った今も、まだ同じことが続いている。

1月30日、シリア難民など100人以上を乗せた船が、トルコ西部沖のエーゲ海で岩に衝突して転覆。10人の子供を含む少なくとも37人が死亡した。AP通信などが報じた。

この日の午前7時、けたたましい救急車の音で目を覚ましたというAFP通信のフォトジャーナリスト、オザン・コーセー氏が、海岸で目にした内容を、次のようにブログに綴っている。

海岸に着いて初めて目にしたのは、赤ちゃんの亡骸でした。生後9〜10カ月ぐらいに見えました。暖かい格好をしていて、帽子をかぶっていました。服にはオレンジ色のおしゃぶりが、ついていました。近くに、8〜9歳ぐらいの子供の遺体もありました。隣には、女性の遺体が。彼らの母親かもしれません。

コーセー氏は、たくさんの亡骸が海岸に横たわる光景を見て、怒りが湧いてきたと記している。

「なぜこのような戦争がシリアで果てしなく続いているのか。この戦争に関わる全ての政治家と、密航業者への怒りが、私を満たした」。

シリア内戦の終結を目指す和平協議は1月29日、アサド政権側と反体制派が参加し、国連の仲介によって、スイスのジュネーブで始まった。しかし、協議にはシリアのクルド人勢力「人民防衛部隊」や、過激派組織「イスラム国」（IS）、国際テロ組織アルカイダ系のヌスラ戦線などが参加していなかったり、アサド政権がテロ組織だと非難する「イスラム軍」が交渉参加を訴えたりなどして、2月3日現在も調整は難航している。

国際移住機関（IOM）の公式サイトによると、2016年1月だけで6万2193人がトルコからギリシャへ海を渡った一方、272人が渡航中にエーゲ海で死亡または行方不明になったとされる。
