What a thunderstorm tonight in Halle... As I saw the lightnigs at the horizon, I took my gear and drove to the market place in Halle and this is the resault. I think its not bad for my first lightning photos but I still have to learn. First thing is to buy a rainjacket and a cover for my camera for the next time... :D\n\nPress L to view in large...\n\nNikon D5000 with Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR\nISO 200, 35mm, f8.0, 4s (credit:Hallenser/Flickr)

2003-Aug-23 - Toronto thunderstorm\n\nIncluded in this bit of background on my interest in photography, I mention a couple of the ways that this particular photo has been used. It\'s curious to see how it has taken on a life of it\'s own, by virtue of the fact that I had decided to share it (under a Creative Commons license) with others.\n\nUpdate (2008-Aug-27): I\'m trying an experiment with this shot, on account of the tremendous feedback that I\'ve received. Something that I\'ve been curious about for a while is CafePress.com. So, as a test this photo has been made available for purchase as a framed panel print.\n\nThankyou everyone for your kind compliments. I must admit, I\'m really quite surprised by the amount of attention and fantastic feedback that this photo has received. (credit:krunkwerke/Flickr)

Lightning crashes\n\nA few hints to the ppl who would like to take these kind of pics: \n\n1. Use the M-setting, that is Manual aperture, Manual Exposure, Manual ISO settings, Manual zoom-factor and most important: Manual focus. (This one was @ f2.8, 30s, 100ISO)\n\n2. Determine your zoomfactor (wider is better, you can crop afterwards), lock your zoom if possible, and then focus at infinity on manual. For this you may use a street-light at decent distance to auto-focus on, an then switch to manual focus. If left on autofocus your camera won\'t be your best friend for this...\n \n3. Shoot in RAW: This pic was actually heavy over-exposed, but a little bit HDR-tonemapping made it quite acceptable.\n\n5. Shoot at large aperture. Ok, it makes focussing a bit more fragile, but you really need the contrast (for capturing those less-bright tunnels) unless you\'re in really, really close. It beats higher ISO-settings anytime...\n\n4. Shoot lowest ISO: 100, 200 maybe 400, larger makes it difficult for post-processing. \n\n6. Test your settings: shoot a pic at say, 10sec, take a look and determine if it is dark enough (taken that you didn\'t get a flash ;). If it\'s pitch-dark you can go to 30 sec or even bulb-settings.\n\n7. It\'s better to over-expose than to under-expose (darkening the shot works, lighting up will not!)\n\n8. Don\'t get struck with lightning, that could potentially hurt your equipment\n\nGood luck\n\nTotal Creative Commons (if you leave a message :) (credit:zoutedrop/Flickr)

Being taken with an automatic digicam, it totally overexposed the picture. It was pretty burnt, so I had to apply extreme contrast and get the brightness down in order to see anything. This is the result. Best in large! (credit:kainet/Flickr)

...well, technically a \'bolt from the grey\' I suppose. This shot depicts the outer fringe of another storm moulded into shape by the mountains of the Mogollon Rim. There were blue skies immediately on the other side of this narrow spalling rain shower; which appeared to be where the hot and cold air were meeting to generate such fine electrical displays.
