ソチオリンピックは2月19日、スノーボードの女子パラレル大回転の予選が行われ、4大会連続の出場となる竹内智香（ともか）が決勝に進出、銀メダル以上を確定させた。スノーボード女子の日本代表がメダルを獲得するのはオリンピック史上初。
スノーボードの女子パラレル大回転は、2つのコースを1回ずつ滑って合計タイムを競う。女子予選は16組32選手が参加して行われた。
竹内は、予選1回目を52秒の1位、2回目を54秒33の8位で滑り、合計タイム1位で予選を通過。勝ち抜きトーナメントとなるベスト8決定戦、準々決勝も突破して4位以内を確定させた。
準決勝では、メシク（オーストリア）に1回目で1秒01、2回目では転倒したメシクに大差をつけて快勝、決勝にコマを進めた。
決勝では、1回目でクンマー（スイス）に0.3秒差をつけて優位に立った。
