東芝の原発ビジネスは正直なところ、どうなんでしょうかね

不採算事業改革案の報道では「成長性の高い記憶用半導体や、原発などインフラ事業を強化する」などとも書かれており、少なからず驚きました。原発を今から強化、ですか。

もう年末ですね。今年の電機業界といえば、東芝の不適切会計問題が一番大きな話題だったでしょうか。

今月に入ってからは、東芝は最大7000人ものリストラを行うと報道されています。

会計問題があったので事業のリストラを迫られたというよりも、元々不採算の部門のリストラを避けるために会計を操作していたということでしょう。

リストラの対象としては、白物家電、テレビ、パソコン、システムLSIやディスクリード半導体などと報道されています。

これらの事業は他の電機メーカーでも不採算となり、既にリストラを終えているものが多い。製品が成熟して成長が鈍ったり、コモディティ化したり、アジアの競合の台頭で競争が激化したり、日本企業が凋落したのは構造的な問題もあるので、やっぱり東芝もダメだったのか、というのが正直な感想です。

一方、外から見るといまひとつ良くわからないのが、原発事業。2006年にウエスティングハウスを買収した時からは、環境が随分変わりました。

東日本大震災の原発事故による原発離れ、シュールガス革命による石油価格の低下、新興国の成長鈍化・・・など、環境が変わったことは不運だったのかもしれません。

原因はともかく、原発など電力事業の買収によって膨らんだ東芝の一兆円を超す「のれん代」は毀損しているのではないか、減損処理が必要ではないか、という疑いが、日経ビジネスの一連のスクープ(例えば「東芝、原発幹部さえ疑う「64基計画」」)で明らかになったように、相変らず残っているのです。

この件は既に報道し尽された感がありますし、東芝幹部の記者会見では毎回記者や証券アナリストの方が突っ込みを入れるところでもあります。

原発問題についていずれは東芝も詳しく発表するのだろうな、と思っていましたが、例えば産経新聞の報道(「東芝、家電合理化5千~6千人削減で調整 不採算事業の改革案、21日にも発表」)には、

「成長性の高い記憶用半導体や、原発などインフラ事業を強化する」

などとも書かれており、少なからず驚きました。

原発を今から強化、ですか。

今更、原発事業がやばいなどとは言えないとか、原発は国策でもあるので会社だけの判断で言いたくても言えないとか、色々な事情があるのではと推察されます。

会社を再建する時は、悪い要素は一気に吐き出すというのが鉄則で、半導体、パソコン、テレビ・・・など報道されているだけのものも多いですが、矢継ぎ早に再建案が出されそうなのは良いことです。

その一方、もし電力事業だけは都合の悪い情報を隠し、今のような中途半端な状況が続くとすると、せっかくリストラしても再建の勢いがそがれてしまう、もったいないことだと思います。

本当に成長するとしても、「将来成長することを証明する」のは至難の技でしょうが、もう少し詳細で具体的な説明があっても良いのではないかと。

本当のところ、東芝の原発事業はどうなるのでしょうね。
