トヨタ上級副社長、テスラCEOによる燃料電池自動車についての皮肉発言を一蹴

トヨタ上級副社長のボブ・カーター氏が燃料電池自動車へのテスラCEOのイーロン・マスク氏の、「実に馬鹿げたもの(フール・セル)」との批判を一蹴した。

テスラCEOのイーロン・マスク氏は、水素を使用する燃料電池自動車について「実に馬鹿げたもの」と言い放ち、"フューエル・セル(燃料電池)"をもじって「フール(愚かな)・セルだ」などと言及してきたが、同様の意見を持つ人は彼の他にも大勢いる。トヨタはこうした意見にずっと反論し続けており、1月22日に開かれたJ.D.パワー・オートモーティブ・サミットでも、トヨタ上級副社長のボブ・カーター氏が燃料電池自動車への批判を一蹴した。

テスラのマスクCEOは、北米国際自動車ショーで開かれたイベント「オートモーティブニュース・ワールドコングレス」の場で、「燃料電池自動車(FCEV)は"極めて愚かな方法"でエネルギーを蓄えており、最高の燃料電池でも現在流通しているバッテリーにはかなわない」と語り、FCEVの欠点は数年で明らかになると予想した。これに対しトヨタのカーター氏は、「2〜3年先のことでなく、2020年代を見越せば燃料電池の必要性が見えてくる」と反論し、トヨタが燃料電池をEV(電気自動車)テクノロジーの拡張技術として考えていることを強調した。

日本で昨年12月に発売されたトヨタの燃料電池自動車「MIRAI(ミライ)」は、米国でも年内に販売がスタートする。ヒュンダイ「ツーソン」の燃料電池モデルは既にカリフォルニア州で販売されており、ホンダの燃料電池自動車も2016年に導入される予定だ。

ちなみにカーター氏は、マスク氏のテスラがバッテリー式EVだけに注力していることに対して、「もしも私が、"持っている卵を全て1つのカゴに入れて運ばなければならない立場"にいたとしたら、彼と同じコメントをしただろう」と発言している。
