「クイア」（レズビアン、ゲイ、バイセクシュアル、トランスセクシュアル、トランスジェンダーなど、性的マイノリティーを包括する総称）と呼ばれる人々が、主流メディアや社会で取り上げられることが増えてきている。けれどもだからと言って、世間に広まるイメージが、そうした人々の本来の姿や生き方を常に正しく十分に映し出しているわけではない。
トランスジェンダーに関して言えば、最近の1年は彼らにとって歴史的なものとなった。女優のラヴァーン・コックスが米誌「Time」の表紙を飾った初のトランスジェンダーとなって話題を集めたのをはじめ、ライターのジャネット・モックがトランスジェンダーとしての人生を振り返った著書『Redefining Realness』（リアルさを再定義する）を出版後、英テレビホストのピアース・モーガンと対決した（ジャネット・モックは、2014年2月にピアース・モーガンの番組に出演した際、「元男性」と呼ばれたとしてツイッターで批判した。それに対してモーガンが反発し、モックを番組に再び招いて議論を戦わせた）。トランスジェンダーに対する関心や注目がこれほど集まったことは今までなかったのではないだろうか。
私たちは、トランスジェンダーの人々をもっと知りたいと考えている。特に、通常なら脚光を浴びることがない人や、メディアに取り上げられたり騒がれたりしないごく普通の人々のことだ。
ということで、今年8月にTwitterで呼びかけたところ、たくさんの人たちが、ハッシュタグ「#WhatTransLooksLike（トランスジェンダーはこんな感じ）」を付けて自らの写真を公表してくれた。彼らに敬意を表したい。
今回のキャンペーンに協力してくれた美しい人々の姿をぜひ見てほしい。以下では、その一部を紹介しよう。また、自分もこの素晴らしい取り組みに参加したいという方は、ハッシュタグ「#WhatTransLooksLike」をつけて自分の写真をツイートしてもらえば、数日中に追加される予定だ。
