アメリカ・カリフォルニア大バークレー校で2月1日夜、トランプ支持者の講演に抗議するデモ隊が暴徒化し、講演が中止になった問題で、ドナルド・トランプ大統領は2月2日Twitterで、講演者を擁護し、大学への連邦資金拠出を取りやめる可能性を示唆した。
右翼ニュースサイト「ブライトバート・ニュース」編集幹部のヤノプルス氏は1日、バークレー校の共和党支持者団体「バークレー校共和党クラブ」に講演を依頼され来校していたが、このイベントに抗議する1000人以上のデモ隊の一部が暴徒化し、講演は中止された。
「インターネット上で最も優れた極悪人」と自称するヤノプルス氏は、ヘイト・スピーチの扇動家として批判を浴びている。
ヤノプルス氏は、トランプ政権で首席戦略官を務める白人至上主義者のスティーブ・バノン氏率いる「ブライトバート・ニュース」の編集者。SNS上で人種差別的な発言を繰り返し、ユーザーを煽って挑発する「荒らし」としても知られ、Twitterから永久追放された人物だ。
ヤノプルス氏はまた、言論の自由を標榜する自由主義者を自称している。 その信念のもと、「レイプカルチャー（男性が性暴力の深刻さを軽視する風潮）は虚構だ」「トランスジェンダーは精神疾患だ」といった挑発的な発言を拡散させている。
学生と大学職員はこの講演の中止を求めていたが、ニコラス・ダークス学長は「ヤノプルス氏の発言内容を理由に中止するのは憲法に反する」と声明を出していた。
トランプ大統領は、バークレー校がヤノプルス氏の講演が中止になったことを受け、大学を激しく非難した。
トランプ氏はヤノプルス氏を名指しこそしなかったが、彼を「価値観の違う罪なき人」と呼んだ。
イアノプーロス氏は、評論家たちがネオナチと結びつける、極右思想のオルタナ右翼（オルト・ライト）運動の熱心な支持者だ。
事件の模様を報じたFOXニュースの司会者トッド・スターンズ氏が、大学に対する連邦資金の打ち切りを求めた直後、トランプ氏は以下のようにツイートした。
もしカリフォルニア大学バークレー校が言論の自由を認めず、見解の異なる無実の人たちに暴力を振るうなら……連邦の資金はいらないのか？

ケリーアン・コンウェイ大統領顧問は2日、FOXニュースの「フォックス・アンド・フレンズ」に出演し、「大統領の言っていることはもっともだ。バークレー校の学生たちは言論の自由を歓迎していないということになる」と語った。
トランプ大統領が悪名高きブライトバートの編集者を擁護することは決して驚くことではない。彼は白人至上主義者で有名なブライトバート元会長のスティーブ・バノンを彼の最高顧問の一人として迎え入れている。
