2016年アメリカ大統領選挙に向けた2大政党の候補者指名争いは、4月26日、ペンシルベニア州、メリーランド州など東部の5州で民主、共和両党の予備選があった。

ニューヨーク・タイムズなどによると、共和党は、獲得代議員数でトップを走る不動産王ドナルド・トランプ氏が、コネティカット、デラウェア、メリーランド、ペンシルベニア、ロードアイランドの5州すべてで勝利を確実にした。民主党もヒラリー・クリントン前国務長官が4州で勝利を確実にした。

両者とも、7月の全国党大会で指名を得るのに必要な、全代議員の過半数獲得に向け大きく前進した。CNNによると、獲得代議員数でトランプ氏は、過半数(1237人)にあと300人弱、クリントン氏もバーニー・サンダース上院議員との差を広げ、過半数(2383人)にあと約300人に迫っている。トランプ氏は、19日のニューヨーク州以降、東部の州で勝利を重ねており、一時は厳しいとみられていた過半数獲得が現実味を帯びてきた。
