アメリカ大統領選挙が8日(現地)に投開票され、共和党候補のドナルド・トランプ氏が当選確実となった。これまで「不動産王」として知られてきたトランプ氏とは、どういう人なのか。

アメリカ大統領選挙が8日(現地)に投開票され、共和党候補のドナルド・トランプ氏(70)が当選確実となった。これまで「不動産王」として知られてきたトランプ氏とは、どういう人なのか。改めて振り返ってみる。

トランプ氏はこれまで、移民問題などでの暴言で物議を醸しながらも根強い人気を維持してきた。2015年6月に立候補表明した際には、ベトナム戦争に従軍し、2008年大統領選の共和党候補だったジョン・マケイン上院議員を侮辱したりもした。朝日新聞デジタルは15年7月22日付で次のように伝えた。

6月の出馬表明の際に「メキシコは問題のある人間を(米国に)送り込んでいる。彼らは強姦(ごうかん)犯だ」などと発言して物議を醸した。(中略)

アイオワ州で今月18日にあった共和党大会に現れたトランプ氏は、マケイン氏がベトナム戦争で捕虜だった過去を取り上げ、「彼は戦争の英雄ではない。私は捕虜にならなかった人が好きだ」と述べた。

トランプ氏はさらに、メキシコとの国境に不法移民の入国を防ぐため「万里の長城」を築き、メキシコにその費用を払わせるとも述べた。これらの発言を受け、トランプ氏が運営に関わるミス・ユニバース大会にメキシコが不参加を決めるなど、物議を醸した。

■ライバル候補の携帯番号を暴露

また、サウスカロライナ州での15年7月21日の演説では、共和党のライバル候補の1人リンゼー・グラハム上院議員の携帯電話の番号を嫌がらせで暴露。「かけてみよう」と聴衆をけしかけた。ちなみに、トランプ氏とグラハム議員は、互いを「ばか」「間抜け」などと呼び合い、反目し合う仲だ

度重なる暴言にもかかわらずトランプ氏が人気を維持した理由について当時、「オバマ政府の進歩政策に嫌気がさした共和党支持の有権者の支持を受けたため」と指摘された

アメリカのメディアは、トランプ氏が立候補宣言をした際には、同氏を泡沫候補扱いしていた。メディアは、このような暴言を繰り返すトランプ氏が世論の支持を集めていることで、民主党の最有力候補ヒラリー・クリントン前国務長官にプラスに働いていると指摘していた

■「偉大な米国を取り戻す」

共和党の大統領候補指名争いには17人が乱立。トランプ氏は、負けた場合の第3党からの立候補をにおわせ、本命候補たちをけん制。トップに立ってからは、主流派らが「反トランプ」で結束できずにいるうちに、勝利をさらった。毎日新聞は次のように伝えた。

「偉大な米国を取り戻す」というスローガンで、現状に不満を持つ民主党員や無党派層にも支持を広げた。自身を古い体制と戦う「アウトサイダー」と位置づける一方、30年間政界の中心にいたクリントン候補に「体制派」とレッテルを貼り、国務長官時代の私用メール問題をとりあげ、クリントン氏の「不正」非難を繰り返した。3回のテレビ討論会はすべて「敗北」と評価され、10月7日には過去の女性蔑視発言が暴露されて、女性や保守派らの離反を招いた。

トランプ氏は、公職経験のないままアメリカの第45代大統領となる。

■保有する不動産は時価数千億円

トランプ氏は、ニューヨーク出身。ペンシルベニア大学卒。全米にホテルやカジノ、ゴルフ場などを持つ不動産王として知られる。コトバンクによると、1994年にアジアや欧州の投資家と共同でニューヨークのエンパイア・ステートビルを買収。保有する不動産は時価数千億円ともいわれる。
