リオデジャネイロ・オリンピックは8月6日、体操男子の予選があり、エースの内村航平が鉄棒で落下し、金メダルが有力視されていた種目別鉄棒で決勝進出を逃した。
団体で3大会ぶりの金メダルを狙う日本代表は第1班を終えて269.294点で中国、アメリカ、ロシアに次いでまさかの4位。個人総合でも内村は90.498点で2位となった。
体操予選は、あん馬、吊り輪、跳馬、平行棒、鉄棒、床の各種目を、各国代表5人のうち4人が演技し、上位3人の得点を合計する。予選の点数は決勝に反映されない。
この日の日本代表はミスが目立った。朝日新聞デジタルによると、朝4～5時起床、午前10時競技開始という慣れないコンディションの中、最初のあん馬で田中佑典が落下。山室光史が跳馬でしりもち、平行棒で落下と失敗を重ねるなどした。
そして鉄棒で内村は、離れ技「屈身コバチ」でバーを握りきれず、背中から地面に落ちた。
時事ドットコムによると、内村は以下のようにコメントした。
個人としては鉄棒で普段しないところでの落下があったのですごく悔しい。練習をかなり積んできたが、これが五輪の舞台。少し過信していたのかと思う。気持ちを切り替えて、決勝ではきょう出たミスをしないよう調整したい。
団体が4位通過となったことで、朝日新聞デジタルによると、決勝の種目の演技順が変わる。日本は金メダルを取った2004年アテネ大会同様、最後に鉄棒を演技して好印象を残すことを狙っていたが、それにはトップ通過の必要があった。4位だとあん馬から始まりゆかに終わる順番になるという。
