6月12日、4年に一度のスポーツの祭典、サッカー・FIFAワールドカップブラジル大会が開幕した。サンパウロで行われた開幕戦は3対1でブラジルがクロアチアを下した。詳細な結果、試合データはハフポストのダッシュボードで掲載している。
圧倒的な優勝候補に挙げられているブラジルは前半早々にオウンゴールを許すが、地元の期待を一身に背負ったネイマールが同点ゴールを決めた。後半もブラジルが支配する時間帯が続く中、ブラジルのフレッジがペナルティエリア内でファールを受け、ペナルティキックを獲得。ネイマールが決めて逆転すると、終始サイドを突破していたオスカルがミドルシュートで追加点。危なげなく試合を終え、開幕戦をものにした。
なお、この試合は西村雄一主審ら日本の審判団が裁いている。
会場設営の遅れなど心配されていた運営体制だが、開幕戦でも一部、照明が消えるシーンがあるなど、不安の残る結果となった。
日本の初戦、コートジボワール戦は15日午前10時キックオフ。ハフポスト日本版では日本の全試合をテキスト中継する予定だ。
